Kampong Gelam is an historical area and the traditional heart of Singaporean Muslim life. It was once a cosmopolitan settlement of Muslims from diverse ethnic backgrounds and home to the Sultanate of Singapore during the early colonial days.

Today, Kampong Gelam is still the hub of the Muslim community in Singapore. Retaining its architectural heritage, Kampong Gelam today has been renovated to preserve its rich culture and history.

 
 
 

Kampong Gelam is named after the Gelam Tree that was found in abundance in that area.

A "Muslim Quarter" in the colonial days, Kampong Gelam was also home for the Sultan of Singapore.

The Kampong Gelam historic district was gazetted as a conservation area in 1989. Certain streets where ethnic trades and activities unique to the historic distict used to be concentrated are designated as core areas.
